Baby bottle tooth decay
What is ; Bottle caries, or as it is now known, early childhood caries, is a common type of caries that starts especially in the upper front milk teeth of babies and spreads rapidly to other teeth and progresses very quickly.
It occurs when babies or children fall asleep during breastfeeding or with a bottle in their mouth. Here, it is not the baby bottle that causes the decay, but the sugary, honey or molasses milk, formula or breast milk in the bottle. The fact that these sugary liquids come into contact with the teeth all night long causes rapid decay of the milk teeth.
Baby bottle caries first start with chalky white spots on the enamel of the teeth and give a yellowish brown appearance with material losses from the enamel. Most of the time, when the family notices the decay in the teeth, the caries is very advanced. Early diagnosis of baby bottle caries is very important. Bottle caries can be controlled with the nutritional advice given by your pediatric dentist and protective applications at the early start. However, when it is late, root canal treatment may be required or teeth may need to be extracted.
To protect from baby bottle caries, make sure your baby does not fall asleep with a bottle of sugary liquids in his mouth. After each feeding, clean your teeth with a clean cloth or a soft-bristled toothbrush. If you cannot clean them, put water in the bottle and at least rinse the mouth. Most importantly, you should take your baby to a pedodontist regularly after the first teeth are erupted.
